Within this rectangle you will find the city’s largest and finest stock of architecturally distinctive
prewar buildings, most of them now cooperatives (see
Glossary).  Most of these grand structures
were built in New York’s “glory days” during the 1920s and ‘30s and today sit shoulder to
shoulder with elegant limestone townhouses and charming brownstones.  Central Park West is
lined with splendid landmarked buildings, the most famous being the Dakota, the El Dorado, the
Prasada, the San Remo, the Beresford and the Majestic.  What is less known are the equally grand
buildings, built by the same architects of that era, that line
Riverside Drive and West End Avenue,
as well as dotting many streets in between.  There are also prewar and some stunning modern and
postwar condominiums, including the newest one, Time Warner Center's condominium..

The Upper West Side features more than grand architecture.  It has a cultural life all its own and is
home to more writers, composers, performers and musicians than any other neighborhood in
Manhattan.  The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts is the magnet attracting the talented and
the famous as well as audiences who love their performances.  Young professionals have also
flocked to the Upper West Side, and the neighborhood overflows with trendy bars, cafés and
restaurants, especially the outdoor terrace cafés and restaurants which line Columbus Avenue in
the 70s and Broadway across from Lincoln Center. It is also famous for some of  the city’s best
gourmet markets, including Citarella (fresh fish and seafood), Fairway and Zabar’s, on
Broadway.  Exclusive Madison Avenue stores also have their Upper West Side branches, including
Barney’s, Godiva and Neuhaus chocolatiers, and others.

And, because the Upper West Side is the only Manhattan neighborhood bordered by two parks,
Central Park and
Riverside Park , Upper West Siders have only a few blocks to go to find an oasis
of green.
